Ask better questions: five patterns that open up a conversation

Most conversations stay shallow because the questions are closed: "Good weekend?" "Yes." Small changes in how you ask make people tell stories instead.

1. "What" and "how" instead of "did" and "is"

"Did you like it?" invites yes or no. "What did you like about it?" invites a story.

2. Ask about the path, not the position

"What do you do?" gets a job title. "How did you end up doing that?" gets a story with turns, surprises and choices.

3. Ask for the specific moment

"What was the best part of the trip?" is easier to answer — and more vivid — than "How was the trip?"

4. Ask about change

"What's something you changed your mind about recently?" is one of the most interesting questions you can ask anyone. It invites reflection instead of a script.

5. Follow the energy

Listen for the moment someone speeds up, smiles or gets more precise. That's the topic they care about. Ask one more question right there: "Tell me more about that."

One rule on top

Ask one question, then really listen to the answer. The best follow-up question is almost always built from something the other person just said.

Practice

At your next conversation, try one "how did you end up…" question and one "tell me more about that". Notice what happens.
